My Reputation – 1946
I had seen bits and pieces of this movie but was never able to watch the whole thing until I was taking one of my chemo treatments. This movie stars Barbara Stanwyck who, before running a ranch near Stockton in “The Big Valley”, played a wide variety of roles. These included women of questionable morals in the pre-code era, femme fatales, drama and comedy.
In this drama Stanwyck plays Jessica Drummond, a grieving widow raising two sons alone. While on a skiing trip she falls in love with Major Scott Landis, play by George Brent. (Back then Hollywood could always depend on George Brent to start heart’s throbbing). The relationship is short-lived and upon returning home she starts a relationship with with another man, Frank Everett (Warner Anderson). But when Scott Landis moves into town the flames of passion reignite Jessica’s feelings towards Scott.
Of course this causes tongues to start wagging and gossip ensues. Afterall he’s not even in their social group! -The horror. So naturally this ruins her reputation. The country club even manages to get her sons involved in their gossip fest.
This movie also has a great performance by perennial gal pal, Eve Arden. Here she plays Gina Abbott, Jessica’s friend.
This bittersweet little weeper is is worthy of serval hankies and is fun soapy way to spend some time. On the surface the premise may seem outdated by today’s standards but at it’s core it’s really not. After all it is about prejudging before knowing all the facts, something that still occurs in society today. This makes the movie very relatable.
So grab some tissues and settle back to watch some fine performances by great actors in this enjoyable little weeper.
